It's always a great time to speak with students about the importance of listening as the school year is in swing. Teachers go over listening skills with their students during those crucial first few days of schools. In addition of going over routines, rules, and expectations, students need to be reminded of HOW to listen and the IMPORTANCE of listening. I know it seems easy, right? But for many students, it can be a challenge. So much could be going on in the classroom that can be distracting....those pencil tappers can get everyone off task!
Kindergarten: I will play the story, Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen. Kinders love Howard. He is quite silly! After the story, they will play a game in which they guess the picture in which Howard is demonstrating he is listening. Students will also have a rabbit template and a drawing activity to finish off the lesson.

First Grade: Since I do not have a hard copy of the book, I will play the book "Lacey Walker Nonstop Talker" from youtube and we will discuss. We go over how we show we are good listeners--What Does A Good Listener Look Like?" After we go over examples, First grade students will have to pass a listening test! I tell them my test is super, super hard. After our discussion, it is time for them to shine on the test! To wrap up our lesson, students will have a writing activity in which they complete the sentence, "I Listen and Show Respect When.... There's also a cute owl craft that goes along with the lesson I think the kids will love.
Second Grade:
If you haven't looked up EPIC please do so! Here is the link. It's a great website (you can download an APP for your iphone or Android) with tons and tons of books for you to read with your child or your child to read by himself/herself. I will be reading one of the Scaredy Squirrel books from Epic with my second grade students. I will give them a "test" to see if they listened well and can remember some of the things discussed in the book. After our book, students will participate in describing a Good Listener. We will look at and discuss a what a good listener does, thinks, listens for, and what a good listener does not do. Kids have no idea that so many factors go into being a good listener. And finally, I will give a multistep direction "test" to see how well they do! And, unfortunately, I am not nice...I don't repeat the sentence. I do warn them ahead of time. I want them to really work on listening--the first time.
